VAR, the reactive power which flows in AC power transmission systems, and in equipment running AC power, interferes with the transmission of electric power, increases losses from the generator to the electric power consumer, and makes the grid more vulnerable to grid instability that causes grid black-outs.
Reactive power is an obstacle to connecting renewable sources to the existing grid, and when unmanaged at an industrial facility, can cause significant penalties and increases in electrical energy fees. For these reasons a quality solution to this problem can prolong the life of equipment, stabilize the grid and lower energy bills.
Power Electronic Devices for Reactive Power Management
SmartDVC devices are being designed in a size range from 250 KVAR up to 1MVAR, employ IGBTs in a soft-switching topology, and can be combined to produce a specific size as needed, at a cost lower than any other comparable solution. Driving the functionality of SmartDVC is a control card that samples what is happening in an environment, makes decisions, and intelligently adjusts voltage fluctuations, and neutralizes any leading or lagging reactive power levels. Any SmartDVC device can be remotely monitored and controlled via wireless internet or RF signal communication
Benefits of SmartDVC
- Has a bandwidth over 100 Hz, well above the flicker control requirements of about 30 hertz
- Total harmonic distortion (THD) about 1%, well below the 6% IEEE 519-1992 guidelines
- VAR current is independent of the line voltage, thus it is not as voltage sensitive as either a capacitor bank or other VAR compensator products
- Can switch from full leading to full lagging power factor in a fraction of an AC cycle
- Draws harmonic-free current and requires no additional harmonic line filters
- Voltage and Frequency Independent: the DVC reactive current injection into the AC terminals is independent of the line voltage or line frequency (unlike capacitor banks)
- Scalable sizing, and can be effectively integrated with existing VAR capacitor banks
- Lowest cost dynamic VAR compensators that is highly responsive (sub-cycle response)
- It is "soft-switching", thus lower switching losses and lower EMI radiation or conduction
Smart Control Software
Smart Control Monitoring Software can display power factor and reactive power levels for any SmartDVC device on a power network. Power system operations managers can view current or historic data, and set up simple rules that send status alerts. To provide Demand Generation of reactive power in a Smart Grid solution, set the system to zero reactive power, or a specific leading or lagging reactive power.
