Grid Edge Volt-VAR Control
Manage system performance. Optimize reactive power in real-time.
Today’s electrical grid is experiencing a change in ways it never has: improve demand control, absorb high levels of distributed generation and adapt to time-varying loads. To adapt to rising changes, the modernized grid needs greater control of how voltage is delivered to consumers, and needs to adjust in real-time to demand loads.
- Optimization of reactive power (VAR) flow between generation, transmission and distribution (GT&D) systems
- Deferring the need to invest in new GT&D assets
- Reduced technical losses
- Shaving peak demand during high demand times
- Reducing energy consumption on a 24/7/365 basis
Utilities can use Varentec’s ENGO+GEMS technology as a complete Grid Edge Volt-VAR Control (VVC) solution to manage system performance and costs. With ENGO+GEMS, utilities are empowered to manage leading and lagging vars in real time, wherever needed, when they deploy ENGO+GEMS. The solution can dispatch VARs to improve substation power factor and reduce line losses. It can provide dynamic VAR injection to support voltage when fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR) events occur, when VARs are most needed. VARs can be dispatched at will to support transmission and generation specifically for large-scale wind integration that would otherwise require capacitor banks, static VAR compensators and STATCOMs.
As a complete Grid Edge VVC solution, ENGO+GEMS delivers comprehensive performance and cost benefits. It can reduce technical voltage and watt losses on distribution feeders to improve grid efficiencies, improve the quality of the power supply, and, ultimately, save electrical energy. Utilities can apply the solution as a conservation voltage reduction (CVR) tool to reduce peak demand or to reduce 24/7/365 energy consumption by optimally lowering the voltage on the feeder lines that run from substations to homes and businesses.
Because of the increased efficiency ENGO+GEMS enables, the solution will free up capacity on existing assets and networks, helping utilities serve load growth with existing equipment while deferring capital investments in generation facilities, transmission lines, or substation facilities. The deferred expenditures also help consumers by avoiding impacts on electricity rates that are typically associated with these types of capital investments.
ENGO+GEMS helps extend the life of primary-side assets because the ENGO devices act as “shock absorbers” on the grid, flattening the feeder voltage profile and ultimately relieving the operational burden on load tap changers, line voltage regulators, switched capacitor banks, and other assets. Anytime ENGO devices are deployed on a system, these assets operate less frequently, which increases the service life and reduces maintenance needs of each asset. ENGO devices also reduce the loading on distribution transformers, which also extends transformer service life. For a typical feeder, ENGO+GEMS will extend the life of primary assets by 3 to 5 years.
